Waterfront dialectics : Rome and its region facing climate change impacts
(Sapienza Universita di Roma, 2022) GARCIA, PEDRO CARLOS BOBONE RESSANO; ECATI - Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems
One of the most complex discussions concerning climate emergency is the sustainable water management. How to deal with the risks generated by climate change where the presence of cultural and environmental assets is highly stratified over time? How to manage large densely populated areas rich in environmental and human resources, ensuring their protection and development? It’s now time to integrate the connections between the different territorial scales and to ensure the balance between public and private interests in a framework of sustainable strategies. SOS Climate Waterfront is an interdisciplinary project that aims to explore waterfronts in Europe that are facing climate change. The volume presents the results of the workshop held in Rome in spring 2022.

    Thessaloniki fall 2019 waterfront : Ampelokipi-Menemeni, Kalamaria
(Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 2019) GARCIA, PEDRO CARLOS BOBONE RESSANO; ECATI - Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems
Coastal communities increasingly experience the effects of climate change. It is becoming urgent for researchers, local stakeholders and citizens to address and promote climate resilience and act collectively. Thessaloniki, a port city with a long and continuous history has always retained a strong relationship to its waterfront which extends today more than 40 kilometers along the south east coast of the Thermaicos Gulf in northern Greece. SOS Climate Waterfront is a research European funded project (H2020 – MSCA Rise), reflecting on issues of management, design and planning of waterfront zones. This book presents the outcomes of the event organized in Thessaloniki, focusing on two areas of the city’s waterfront as case studies. Design proposals, scientific papers and reflection opinion articles present insights, strategies and design tools elaborated during this event through the interdisciplinary collaboration of academics, researchers and local government representatives aiming to enhance climate adaptation planning and face climate change risks in the area.

Lisbon 2019 waterfront : Cascais, Mafra, Alcochete
(Lusofona University, 2019) GARCIA, PEDRO CARLOS BOBONE RESSANO; ECATI - Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems
One of the most complex discussions concerning climate emergency is the possible rise in sea level. Existing data show that rising water levels is already a reality, but the question is: how much will this rise be? And, how long do we have to act? SOS Climate Waterfront is a research project financed by Research European Agency that make a reflection about some philosophical and project design questions that relate climate change and wa terfront issues. This book present: Cascais - public space on the seafront; Mafra - World Reserve for Waves and Surf and Alcochete - Samouco Saltpans and the human made coastline. Thematics were set in this book spelling out a set of discussions, ideas and potentials exposed by design project proposals, scientific papers and some opinion articles. The variety of approaches is a goal into the connection between the different parts in this discussion.

Climate-proof planning : creative design solutions in Stockholm
(KTH Royal Institute of Technology, 2023) GARCIA, PEDRO CARLOS BOBONE RESSANO; ECATI - Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems
Stockholm is a city deeply connected to its water, but that relationship is slowly changing. Climate change is raising water levels, overtime faster than the land rises, meanwhile increased precipitation is creating challenges from inland. Urban waterfront areas, both existing and future, will need to take these new circumstances into account. However, there are both challenges and opportunities to create pleasant and sustainable developments in volving multiple perspectives from stakeholders in the city and its surroundings. SOS Climate Waterfront aims to bring students, practitioners, and researches from all over Europe and a wide range of disciplines together to create new strategies and sustainable solutions for infra structure and urban planning. The sites explored during the SOS Climate Waterfront workshop in Stockholm in 2022 provide various challenges re garding contradicting uses, economic tension and, crucially, water levels. Lövholmen is an old industrial site located along Lake Mälaren a lake with an act ively managed water level and the crucial fresh water supply of Stockholm; Frihamnen is the site of Stockholm’s old free port with many cultural values; and Södra Värtan is home to an active cruise ship terminal. In this book, the wide range of creative design solutions that have been envisioned for these sites will be presented to adapt to allow these sites to remain climate-proof.

Along the waterfront : cities in Europe facing climate change
(SOAP – Stichting Open Access Platforms, 2024) GARCIA, PEDRO CARLOS BOBONE RESSANO; ECATI - Department of Computer Engineering and Information Systems
This book is the result of an intense partnership. International and interdisciplinary participants invested months of their lives investigating together. The commitment towards the challenges brought by the anthropogenic effect on climate change was carried out by many, with enthusiasm. New methods of research were tested to seek results and to imagine solutions. The involvement of each participant and institution contributed for the excellency in research. Together they produced a body of knowledge useful for the common good. All this was supported by funds of the Marie Curie Grant given by the Research European Agency. In each waterfront city, the local Principal Researcher hosted international participants and offered them the chance to meet some of the brightest minds, talented professionals who shown great capacities in their own field. Local experts played a funda mental role by sharing updated data with the external researchers who critically reviewed the sites, produced research at a very high level relating the built environment and the impact of climate change. Without the guidance and generosity of each Principal Researcher the research project would have not been possible. Researchers, being experienced or young, participated in the events organized in the five cities. They took a remarkable respon sibility through an innovative judgment of the research questions and gave evidence to be committed, responsible and passionate in the exchange of ideas. Throughout persevering and relentless work, many researchers represented their ideas with remarka ble accuracy, using diagrams, text, models and drawings, which allowed the group to go beyond the initial plans and reach an ex cellent level while remaining remarkably humble. They are all listed in this book. The cross fertilization between participants was the main asset of the consortium gathering academic and non-academic institu tions. Some of the results deal with emerging strategies, they use experimental and rigorous systems, that are challenging intellectu ally and at the design level. The pleasure of having collaborate with outstanding professionals is difficult to express, here. There were moments of revelation, serenity and intelligent seriousness when collaborating together. The atmosphere of mutual trust allowed the production of knowledge, broad and critically developed that hopefully will inspire others.

State of European Film : an overview of key industry trends, insights, and policy recommendations for the European Film and Audiovisual industry
(Universidade Lusófona, 2024) Abay, Fatih; Bengesser, Cathrin; Damásio, Manuel José; Frühmorgen, Tobias; Ibrus, Indrek; Kostovska, Ivana; Langgaard, Kirsten; Nielsen, Jakob Isak; O'Leary, Niall; Olesen, Jeppe; Rohn, Ulrike; Saluveer, Sten-Kristian; Materska-Samek, Marta; Talvik, R. Julius; Zemaityte, Vejune; CICANT - Centre for Research in Applied Communication, Culture, and New Technologies; ECATI - School of Communication, Architecture, Arts and Information Technologies
This inaugural edition of the State of European Film Platform presents key findings from the first year of the EU-funded Horizon project CRESCINE. Designed to ensure transparent and accessible information for industry professionals, policymakers, and other key stakeholders along the film value chain, this publication consolidates critical data and insights essential for the future competitiveness of the film and media sectors in Europe’s small markets. The analysis is centered on seven European countries – Belgium, Estonia, Denmark, Lithuania, Croatia, Ireland, and Portugal – and examines a range of interrelated topics illuminating both the challenges and opportunities these markets, and the broader European film industry, face. Themes include the role of film festivals in creating distribution and circulation opportunities for titles originating from small markets and the perceptions of local audiences toward domestically produced films. This comparative approach underpins an original proposal for understanding the various developmental models available to these markets, emphasizing exports as a viable growth driver for the European film industry. The report also explores conditions that either hinder or incentivize competitiveness, addressing issues such as the need for reskilling and upskilling professionals and promoting an entrepreneurial mindset among industry stakeholders— always with sustainability as a central consideration. The future remains inherently uncertain; however, the report asserts that the quality and impact of future decisions depend on the robustness of the available information and the capacity to critically evaluate and act upon it. The European State of Film Report & Platform is committed to enhancing decision-making processes throughout the European film industry and bridging the gap between academic research and industry practice.
