O Movimento Emmaus é um Movimento secular, de solidariedade social, comprometido com a não-violência e que reclama independência em relação a qualquer
forma de poder. Fundada na França do Pós-Guerra pelo Abade Pierre, com o objectivo de “devolver a esperança e a dignidade” aos mais desfavorecidos e “acordar
consciências” entre os privilegiados, a sua independência é assegurada pelo trabalho
dos seus membros e voluntários, levando-os a ajudar outros em igual ou pior situação. Constituída em «comunidades», encontra-se espalhada pelo mundo.
The Emmaus Movement is a secular, socially responsible and non-violent movement which claims independence from any form of power. It was created during Post-war France by the Abbé Pierre with the objective of deliver hope and dignity back to the needy and arouse conscience amongst the more privileged members of society. In order to do this, it must be free and independent and therefore self-sufficient through work, as financial independence also makes for political independence. Communities were set up in order to achieve these objectives and it is now spread throughout the world.
