correntes apresentadas actualmente.
This dissertation is meant to be a reflection on in which ways was developed the perception and interest put on ancient buildings’ ruins thoughout the history of mankind, taking as a premise its ability to safeguard and trigger memory. Making an approach to the evolution of the concept of memory over time, in different areas of the arts and social sciences, it’s intended to realize how memory has influenced, and by what means it has been integrated in the field of architecture. After reflecting on various forms of the use of ruins in different intellectual areas, and how they contributed, along with the memory, to the need for heritage conservation, is made an approach to some theories about the restoration, which would make way for what is now known as buildings refurbishment. In order to realize the potential of the space generated by a building in ruins, some examples of works are presented, on in which the ruin has a different function, but in all is shown the primary attribute of its ability to store memories and tell its story. It is also part of this dissertation a project developed alongside, based on a proposal for the refurbishment of two buildings in ruins, which primary objective, relying on the theories described above, is to seek an alternative to the ordinary proposals presented nowadays.
