dc.description.abstractNas últimas décadas, o aumento das resistências aos antibióticos no tratamento de infeções nos seres humanos e dos animais tem sido preocupante. Por essa razão, há uma necessidade urgente no uso prudente dos mesmos em ambas as áreas. A medicina natural está a tornar-se uma alternativa cada vez mais viável como substituto da antibioterapia e já existem vários artigos científicos publicados que o comprovam. Em medicina veterinária, as otites externas caninas são a principal causa de procura de cuidados veterinários pelos tutores e a mais frequente afeção com recidivas. O seu tratamento baseia-se no uso de antibioterapia tópica, mas na maior parte dos casos não são realizados exames complementares para diagnóstico definitivo dos microrganismos (e.g, bactérias, leveduras) envolvidos. Muitas vezes as otites são recidivantes e os tratamentos sucessivos sem a realização de mais exames de diagnóstico pode causar resistências. Recentemente, Maruhashi et al (2016) comprovou que o uso de um gel à base de mel para otites externas caninas é eficaz no tratamento contra bactérias e/ou leveduras. Com esta conclusão, este estudo pretende perceber se o uso de mel manuka a 40% terá a mesma eficácia. Foram incluídos canídeos com sinais clínicos e achados citológicos compatíveis com otite externa e foram excluídos animais com corpos estranhos, sem membrana timpânica e tumores auriculares. Com os 8 animais neste estudo de casos, os resultados obtidos foram conclusivos que é necessário adicionar outros compostos que modifiquem a viscosidade do preparado e outras substâncias que ajudam na cicatrização da pele e existir maior número de exclusão e de casos nos quais deverá existir uma separação do tipo de microrganismo e o tipo de otite (aguda ou crónica).pt
dc.description.abstractIn the last decades, the increasing in the resistance to antibiotics in the treatment of infections in humans and animals has become a matter of worrying. For this reason, it is urgent and necessary that the usage of these antibiotics is cautious, in both areas. Natural medicine is becoming a viable alternative as a substitute for antibiotic therapy and there are already several published scientific articles that prove this. In veterinarian medicine, canine external otitis is the major cause for veterinarian care search by tutors and the most frequent affection with relapses. Its treatment is based on the use of topical antibiotic therapy, but in most cases complementary tests are not performed in order to have a more conclusive diagnose about the microorganisms involved (e.g., bacteria, yeasts). Otitis is often recurrent and successive treatments without further diagnostic tests can cause more resistance to the treatment. Recently, Maruhashi et al. (2016) has demonstrated that the use of a honey-based gel for canine external otitis is effective in the treatment of bacteria and / or yeast. This thesys intends to conclude if the use of manuka honey at 40% will have the same effectiveness, as stated in the mentioned study. Canids with clinical signs and cytological findings compatible with external otitis were included, and animals with foreign bodies with no tympanic membrane and atrial tumors were excluded of this case study. With the 8 animals in this case study, the results obtained got us to conclude that it is necessary to add other compounds that modify the viscosity of the preparation and other substances that help in the healing of the skin and there is a greater number of cases of exclusion in the which the type of micro-organism should be separated from the type of otitis (acute or chronic).en
