This report was carried out as part of the Curricular Internship at Hospital Vetset to conclude the Integrated Master Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Lusófona University of Humanities and technology of Lisbon, with the goal of developing the theme Feline Hyperthyroidism, understand pathophysiology, as well as the therapeutic forms applied in small animal clinic. This is divided into two parts, in the first part the description of the series is made throughout the internship and in the second part the monograph on feline hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a multisystemic disorder resulting from excess concentrations of the hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3) in the blood, usually associated with hyperplasia or adenoma of the thyroid gland. In cats, the best way to diagnose the disease is by measuring the total hormone T4. Affected animals tend to show polyphagia, hyperactivity and thinness as a result of the accelerated metabolism resulting from the disease. It’s an important cause of morbidity in cats over the age of ten. Therapeutic forms can be medicated, surgical, diet or by radiotherapy, however, the most used therapy is oral medication. The prognosis depends on the patient's physical condition, the evolution and the existence of concomitant diseases.
