multicultural.
vida e a espiritualidade.
The present work seeks to contribute to the understanding of yogic culture in Portugal. The earliest descriptions of yoga occurred in the sixteen century after the arrival of the Portuguese missionaries in India. We study the scenario of institutions and publications in Portuguese language, more abundant after 1975 and the fall of the fascist regime. Compared to traditional Indian yoga, the current practices of postural yoga reflect metamorphoses and syncretisms that occurred in modernity. We characterize the yogas and deepen our studies from a contemporary and multicultural perspective. We conclude that modern practices, in the opinion of practitioners, relate to physical exercise, alternative therapy, philosophy of life and spirituality. We asked Portuguese practitioners, using an online questionnaire, about their religious and political options and habits of practice, among other aspects. After examining the regulatory landscape in several countries, we conclude with a proposal on aspects to be considered in any future regulation of yoga teaching in Portugal.
