The loss of someone significant can influence the dynamics of a family, since the family context is changed, and its members are forced to reorganize and redefine roles. Healthy family functioning, where communication and expression of feelings prevail, as well as cohesion among family members, can contribute to a process of adaptive adjustment to the situation of loss. This master’s dissertation aims to address, understand and characterize the intervention developed in the context of Palliative Care Units in Portugal. Based on a qualitative methodology, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten Social Workers who develop their work in Palliative Care Units, thus analyzing and reflecting on the intervention of Social Work in Palliative Care Units, namely in the context of multidisciplinary teams. The results demonstrate the importance of the intervention of the Social Worker in the Palliative Care Units, both in the follow-up of patients and their families, acting as a mediator between the rest of the technical team and the patient/family. The Social Work professional must be endowed with several skills, namely: active listening, empathy, understanding and effective communication. When working in the context of Palliative Care Units, its main functions are to guide, assist, accompany and understand the vision of the patient and his family. However, it is observed that the challenge most identified by the participants was related to the difficulty in dealing with mental health and the daily overload that when working in the context of Palliative Care Units, naturally, requires. This research has contributed to more knowledge and reflection regarding the professional practices of these technicians, who end up being forgotten several times when we talk about the health area, since they increasingly represent and play a crucial role in working with the patient and the family.
