dc.descriptionChronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a common pathology in cats and frequently associated with complications such as proteinuria and systemic arterial hypertension, which worsen the prognosis and accelerate the progression of the disease. The present study aimed to evaluate the clinical management of proteinuria and hypertension in cats with CKD, analyzing three clinical cases treated with telmisartan and amlodipine. Regular blood pressure monitoring and laboratory evaluations of renal function and proteinuria were performed. The results demonstrated that the control of proteinuria and arterial hypertension is complex, especially in more advanced stages of CKD. Two of the three patients showed a reduction in proteinuria and blood pressure after the initiation of therapy with telmisartan, while one of them exhibited a limited response, requiring additional therapeutic adjustments. The individualization of treatment and frequent monitoring were essential to optimize the clinical outcomes. The adherence of the owners was a determining factor for the success of the therapy. Although the findings are aligned with the literature, the small number of cases limits the generalization of the results. Future studies may explore the use of emerging biomarkers, such as FGF-23 and NGAL, to improve prognostic evaluation and therapeutic efficacy. It is concluded that the effective management of proteinuria and hypertension may contribute to improving the quality of life and prognosis of cats with CKD, reinforcing the importance of continuous follow-up and owner involvement in the therapeutic process.
dc.description.abstractA Doença Renal Crónica (DRC) é uma patologia comum em gatos e frequentemente associada a complicações como proteinúria e hipertensão arterial sistémica, que agravam o prognóstico e aceleram a progressão da doença. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o maneio clínico da proteinúria e hipertensão em gatos com DRC, analisando três casos clínicos tratados com telmisartan e amlodipina. Foram realizadas monitorizações regulares da pressão arterial, avaliações laboratoriais da função renal e da proteinúria. Os resultados demonstraram que o controlo da proteinúria e hipertensão arterial é complexo, especialmente em estádios mais avançados da DRC. Dois dos três pacientes apresentaram redução da proteinúria e da pressão arterial após o início da terapia com telmisartan, enquanto um deles mostrou resposta limitada, exigindo ajustes terapêuticos adicionais. A individualização do tratamento e monitorização frequente foram essenciais para otimizar os resultados clínicos. A adesão dos tutores foi um fator determinante para o sucesso da terapia. Embora os achados estejam alinhados com a literatura, o número reduzido de casos limita a generalização dos resultados. Estudos futuros poderão explorar a utilização de biomarcadores emergentes, como FGF-23 e NGAL, para aprimorar a avaliação prognóstica e a eficácia terapêutica. Conclui-se que o maneio eficaz da proteinúria e hipertensão pode contribuir para a melhoria da qualidade de vida e prognóstico de gatos com DRC, reforçando a importância do acompanhamento contínuo e do envolvimento dos tutores no processo terapêutico.pt
