No contexto norte-americano, falar da noção de cidade implica olhar para além das complexas
redes sociais, económicas, políticas e culturais que se interligam em espaços mais ou menos urbanizados.
É necessário considerar o facto de que na América a cidade assenta no princípio da Cidade
erguida na Colina e esta dimensão mítica e simbólica que inspira os colonos recém-chegados a
Nova Inglaterra é perpetuada nas gerações seguintes, refletindo-se igualmente no panorama literário
norte-americano.
Within the North-American context, talking about the notion of city means looking beyond the complex social, economic, political and cultural networks which are interconnected in more or less urbanized spaces. It is necessary to consider the fact that in America the city is based on the principle of the City Upon a Hill and this mythical and symbolic dimension that inspires the newly arrived settlers to New England is perpetuated in the subsequent generations, reflecting itself in the American literary landscape as well.
