Avaliação da preparação para receber e tratar o paciente neonatal em hospitais veterinários de animais de companhia em Portugal

Abstract

A neonatologia é uma área crucial da medicina veterinária para a sobrevivência dos pacientes recém-nascidos, visto que os mesmos têm características fisiológicas únicas e requerem cuidados especiais adaptados. Em medicina de animais de companhia, este ramo tem vindo a evoluir, devido ao crescente interesse em melhorar a sobrevivência nesta fase da vida, impulsionado pelo fortalecimento do vínculo emocional dos tutores, pelo valor comercial de cachorros de raças caninas e felinas específicas, e pelo desenvolvimento da medicina de abrigo. Contudo, a informação e investigação sobre esta área, a nível mundial, ainda são escassas quando comparado com outras áreas, e em particular, no contexto da medicina veterinária em Portugal, o que limita a implementação de protocolos padronizados e estratégias eficazes para o maneio e tratamento destes pacientes. Neste sentido, esta dissertação teve como objetivo avaliar a preparação dos hospitais veterinários de animais de companhia em Portugal para receber e tratar o paciente neonatal. Para este estudo, foi realizado um questionário digital direcionado aos profissionais de hospitais veterinários de animais de companhia em território nacional, baseado nos conhecimentos da literatura atual. Os resultados demonstraram que, embora a abordagem a este tipo de paciente esteja estabelecida na literatura, a aplicação desses conhecimentos na prática clínica ainda é limitada em Portugal. Este estudo permitiu identificar e compreender as falhas na implementação de diretrizes eficazes nesta área e sugerir estratégias na formação, infraestruturas e protocolos para melhorar o atendimento veterinário a este frágil paciente. Além disso, foi possível obter uma perspetiva pessoal da equipa veterinária hospitalar, que concordou com a importância do investimento nessa área, corroborado pela literatura.

Neonatology is an area of essential importance within veterinary medicine for the survival of newborn patients, since they have unique physiological characteristics and require special adapted care. In companion animal medicine, this field has been evolving due to the growing interest in increasing survival at this stage of life, driven by the strengthening of the emotional bond between owners, the commercial value of litters of specific dog and cat breeds, and the development of shelter medicine. However, information and research on this area worldwide are relatively scarce when comparing to other areas, including in the context of veterinary medicine in Portugal, which limits the implementation of standardized protocols and effective strategies for the management and treatment of these patients. In this sense, this dissertation aimed to evaluate the preparedness of veterinary hospitals for companion animals in Portugal to receive and treat neonatal patients. For this study, a digital questionnaire was conducted aimed at professionals from veterinary hospitals for companion animals in the country, based on knowledge from the current literature. The results demonstrated that, although the difference in the approach to this type of patient is established in the literature, the application of this knowledge in clinical practice is still limited in Portugal. This study allowed the author to identify and understand the gaps in the implementation of effective guidelines in this area and to suggest strategies in training, infrastructure and protocols to improve veterinary care for this fragile patient. In addition, it was possible to obtain a personal perspective of the hospital veterinary team, who agreed with the importance of investing in this area, corroborating the literature.
