Over the years, many authors have dedicated themselves to investigating human development, namely their preferences in mate selection. Through an evolutionary perspective, it has suggested a preference of individuals for romantic partners with reproductive and resource capabilities. On the other hand, the importance of social support for the development of the individual has been highlighted, whether this support is provided by friends and quality social relationships or by romantic relationships. Through an exploratory design, the present study aimed to analyze: (1) the dimensionality of the partner preference measure through the studies of Buss (1989) and Buss, Shackelford and LeBlanc (2000); and (2) the preferential characteristics in the selection of partners, for both genders, in long-term relationships and their relationship with social support. The sample consisted of 472 heterosexual participants, 347 female and 125 male, with a mean age of 43.33 years and 46.32 years, respectively. The results showed that the partner preferences questionnaire has good psychometric qualities and framed the items constituting the measure in two dimensions (emotionality and resources) that are in line with the literature. Regarding the preferential characteristics for both genders and their interaction with social support, significant differences were demonstrated in the study of the differences in averages for the variables social support and gender, however there is no interaction effect between gender and social support in the study of differences in means. The results were discussed and new studies were proposed to fill the existing gaps.
