Resumo
A madeira, juntamente com a terra e a pedra, representaram ao longo dos tempos os materiais mais empregues na construção, até meados do século XIX em que a descoberta de novos materiais, caso nomeadamente do aço e do betão armado, a remeteu para um segundo plano. Atualmente, esta encontra-se a retomar o seu lugar de destaque na construção muito devido a preocupações ambientais globais e a uma consciencialização mais esclarecida em relação às propriedades e vantagens do uso deste material nobre, cuja principal característica é a sua capacidade de regeneração.
O interesse e procura por este material tem vindo a aumentar devido, também, ao desenvolvimento da indústria da madeira que levou à criação de um vasto número de derivados muitos apelativos quer a nível estético como económico – prefabricação. Esta indústria deu também origem a novos e sofisticados sistemas construtivos que dispensam o recurso a estruturas de vigas e pilares, concretizando-se pelo recurso a painéis com função estrutural e onde as propriedades da madeira se veem exploradas e incrementadas ao máximo. Exemplo disso é o sistema austríaco da KLH, usado para construir o edifício de habitação coletiva em madeira mais alto do mundo.
Num futuro próximo, que começou já a avançar, prevê-se que a construção de estruturas em madeira seja cada vez mais presente inclusive inserida em contextos urbanos consolidados e em construções cada vez mais ambiciosas em altura.
Timber represented over the time the main material used in the construction until the mid-twentieth century when the discovery of new materials, namely the reinforced concrete, sent timber to the background. Currently, this is taking again a prominent place in construction due global environmental concerns and to a more enlightened awareness in relation to the properties and advantages of this noble material, whose main feature is its ability to regenerate. The interest and demand for this material has increased also due to the development of the timber industry that created a vast number of derivatives very appealing aesthetic and economically - prefabrication. This industry also gave rise to new and sophisticated building systems that dispense the use of structures of beams and pillars, using only panels with structural function and where the properties of timber have been very exploited and augmented. The Austrian system of KLH, used to construct the world's tallest wooden building is an example of that. In the near future, that has already begun, it is anticipated that the construction of wooden structures increased even included in consolidated urban contexts and constructions increasingly ambitious in height.
