Resumo
As estátuas reais assírias são um exemplo da primazia da imagem régia. O alto investimento material e artístico a elas alocado servia para construir a representação do rei como único referente. Exerciam uma função liminar no discurso político-ideológico pois, referindo-se a seres humanos, muitas ocupavam, contudo, espaços sacralizados no interior dos templos. a sua função e contexto distinguiam-nas de outras expressões discursivas do poder, como os grandes conjuntos de relevos palacianos ou as estelas.
Through thThe Assyrian royal statues exemplify of the superiority of the royal image. The great artistic and material investment allotted to them helped to construct the official representation of the Assyrian king as their sole referent and as the supreme holder of political power on earth. Those statues had an ambiguous role in the political and ideological discourse in such way that, referring though to human beings, many were placed in sacred spaces inside temples. Their functions and contexts of display distinguished them from other discursive expressions of power, such as palace stone reliefs or the steles.
