The increase of collateral damages caused by a stroke (AVC) in family life and the consequences of those damages can lead to the development of behavioral patterns and attitudes in patients and their relatives. We accomplished in this research a descriptive exploratory study recurring to the qualitative paradigm, taking in to account the multiple nature of social and family contexts involved therein. The purpose was to observe the way psycho-education may contribute to the prophilaxis of emotional disturbances in the patient and his/her relatives after a stroke. Departing from representative cases, we conducted a diversified characterization centered on the socio-psychological and socio-affective reeducation of patients’ families and caretakers. The evaluation methodology was focused on sub-groups of each family, according to their individual and collective needs. This research is based on a continuous assessment, where choices, responsibilities, commitments and distresses are intertwined. The perspective of the falling ill phenomenon in the 21st Century as a non-individual but rather collective learning path involved a participated observation process in the regions of Lisbon, Aveiro and Porto. This study demonstrates that a family based treatment as in the case of a stroke contributes effectively to the recovery of physical trauma, facilitating social reintegration and improving the well being and quality of life of patients and their families.
