The current research has the objective of evaluating the impact of laboratorial activity on the promotion of scientific development skills in Natural Sciences by high school students. Its utmost importance is to verify whether laboratory work indeed promotes successful learning in Natural Sciences and thus an improvement in students’ school grades. The choice of the theme for the study is based on the evidence that scientific competence constitutes an important part in the curriculum of studies and is present in teaching units and teaching methodologies with emphasis on CTSA, scientific literacy and environmental education. The teaching of Science directed to the development of scientific competence, implies that the student becomes able in conceptual and methodological terms to solve problem issues both in the classroom and in socio-cultural environment. The case-study, which has a qualitative-quantitative nature, was conducted at a local High School of the Barcelos municipality. Five classes of the high school (7th, 8th and 9th grades) were assessed in their performance on the classes of Natural Sciences. The results of this research show that the students have developed their laboratorial skills, mostly within pairs, with larger frequency and diversity. The laboratory activities promoted the learning abilities of the students in what refers to the scientific knowledge, involving the know-how of concepts and procedures as well as the deepening of skills and abilities, essential for the full development of the students and their scientific knowledge. Finally, the students revealed having an improvement from the beginning of the school year, which led to better school marks. Thus, it has been shown than performing laboratorial activities promoted the improvement of the scientific knowledge, team work competence and responsibility, in all students that participated in this case study.
