A Biopreparação é tão antiga como a civilização humana, tendo sido cometida desde os tempos mais primórdios até aos mais recentes. Não lhe sendo atribuído o real potencial de ameaça, a Biopreparação tem sido durante séculos a arma ideal para um ataque, devido a ser facilmente praticada. As novas tecnologias, aliadas à engenharia genética, permitem a criação de novas espécies de agentes biológicos, ou a melhoria das espécies já existentes, tornando-os mais perigosos e temidos. O CDC agrupou os agentes biológicos em três categorias (A, B e C), de acordo com a sua perigosidade para a saúde pública e potencial uso. É na categoria A que se encontram os microrganismos mais perigosos, muitos deles utilizados, no passado, como armas biológicas.
Um ataque bioterrorista traz enormes consequências para um país e para o mundo, consequências que, de uma forma geral, são semelhantes para todas as Armas de Destruição em Massa. Seja um ataque biológico, químico ou nuclear, as consequências financeiras e psicológicas conseguem abalar uma nação, provocando o medo e o terror na população.
Em Portugal não há registos de ataques biológicos, no entanto existe a Diretiva Operacional Nacional Nº 3 – NRBQ que indica o modo de atuação em casos de Bioterrorismo, em solo português.
Biopreparation is as old as human civilization, having been committed from the earliest times to the most recent. Not being given the real threat potential, Biopreparation has been for centuries the ideal weapon for an attack, due to being easily practiced. New technologies, combined with genetic engineering, allow the creation of new species of biological agents, or the improvement of existing species, making them more dangerous and feared. The CDC grouped biological agents into three categories (A, B and C), according to their hazards to public health and potential use. It is in Category A that the most dangerous microorganisms are found, many of them used in the past as biological weapons. A bioterrorist attack has enormous consequences for a country and for the world, consequences which, in a general way, are similar for all Weapons of Mass Destruction. Be it a biological, chemical or nuclear attack, the financial and psychological consequences can shake a nation, causing fear and terror in the population. In Portugal there are no records of biological attacks, however there is the National Operational Directive No. 3 - NRBQ which indicates the mode of action in cases of Bioterrorism, on portuguese soil.
