Contact zone : live cinema & postcolonial identities

Abstract

Lisboa emerge como centro de encontros multiculturais, reunindo pessoas das antigas colônias portuguesas. Esta investigação artística examina como a manipulação em tempo real de conteúdo audiovisual, com participação ativa de artistas e audiências, pode contribuir para a agência e pertencimento de artistas diaspóricos lusófonos em sociedades marcadas pelos legados coloniais portugueses. Pratt (1991) define zona de contato como o espaço onde “culturas se encontram, colidem e confrontam-se mutuamente, frequentemente em contextos de relações de poder altamente assimétricas” (p. 34, tradução minha). A pesquisa adiciona novas camadas a esta compreensão, partindo da interseção entre cinema e performance ao vivo. Engajada com práticas participativas centradas em artistas lusófonos autoidentificados com comunidades diaspóricas, o projeto enfatiza entrelaçamentos culturais através de diversas expressões artísticas. Desenvolveu-se um estudo de caso sobre três sessões de cinema ao vivo em cidades imersas no legado colonial português: Lisboa, Luanda e Fortaleza. A investigação sublinha a negligência de perspectivas paralelas às narrativas históricas dominantes no contexto pós-colonial contemporâneo, explorando o potencial do ‘ao vivo’ na produção e visualização de narrativas performadas por artistas diaspóricos. Busca-se compreender como o ao vivo pode facilitar a coexistência em sociedades migratórias contemporâneas.

Lisbon stands out as a centre for multicultural encounters, bringing together people from former Portuguese colonies. Our artistic research investigates how the real-time manipulation of audiovisual content, involving active contributions from artists and audiences, can foster the agency and sense of belonging of Portuguese-speaking diasporic artists within societies grappling with the legacy of Portugal’s colonial history. Mary Louise Pratt uses the term contact zone to describe a space where “cultures meet, clash, and grapple with each other, often in contexts of highly asymmetrical relations of power, such as colonialism, slavery, or their aftermaths, as they are lived out in many parts of the world today” (Pratt, 1991, p. 34). Our research aims to add new layers of meaning to this understanding whilst drawing from the intersection of cinema and live performance. Engaged with participatory practices focused on Portuguese-speaking artists who self-identify with diasporic communities, our project emphasises their cultural entanglements through diverse modes of artistic expression. We developed a case study on three live cinema sessions performed in cities with historical legacies embedded in the Portuguese colonial regime: Lisbon, Luanda, and Fortaleza. Our research highlights the neglect of perspectives parallel to dominant historical narratives in our contemporary postcolonial context, whilst exploring the potential of liveness in both producing and viewing narratives performed by diasporic artists. We seek to understand how liveness can facilitate our coexistence in contemporary migration societies.
