This dissertation intends to expose the capacities and qualities of one of the most present and unique elements throughout the history of architecture, the wall. By understanding their origins and influences from certain times, their capacities will be clarified as a physical barrier linked to a more defensive character, as well as their great potential to establish limits and create spaces in a territory. Clarifying its skills as a limiting element, as well as an architectural tool that defines and complements the composition of spaces, through its main function is to create limits and divide spaces, but also as a strong organizer and architect of the city's own design. With this starting point, an analysis began throughout history, in particular on the fortifications of the medieval cities, on how this fundamental element arises with special importance in the understanding of the notion of limit, going from its defensive role, to the a relation that establishes with the place that is inserted, or with the development of the cities, and even through its thickness this can become habitable. It is also important to understand the choice of materials applied in the physical limits of this element, which generate and conform the architectural space. Three reference works will be presented, which will help to translate and distinguish the principles mentioned about some of the functionalities and characteristics of this element. As a result of the work developed in this dissertation, we will finally present a work developed during the last year of the course that will incorporate and conjugate some of the principles previously presented and explored in this dissertation.
