Avaliação das consequências da negligência infantil em agressores do sexo masculino

Abstract

Apesar da negligência infantil ser a forma mais prevalente de maus-tratos, a investigação tem privilegiado o estudo de vitimação através de abuso físico e sexual, possivelmente devido as dificuldades de definição e de medição da negligência. Estudos têm demonstrado que as consequências da negligência infantil são tao graves quanto aquelas associadas ao abuso (tanto físico como sexual), contribuindo para um maior risco de desenvolvimento de psicopatologias e de exposição a fatores de risco que prejudicam o desenvolvimento saudável da criança. Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar as consequências da negligência durante a infância numa amostra de 143 agressores do sexo masculino a cumprir pena de prisão efetiva num estabelecimento prisional. Apesar de estudos anteriores sugerirem que a negligência pode ter um impacto severo, os resultados não encontraram associações estatisticamente significativas entre a experiência de negligência na infância e comportamentos antissociais nesta amostra. Nomeadamente, não foram encontradas associações estatisticamente significativas entre a negligência, o funcionamento cognitivo e o funcionamento executivo. Em suma, a complexidade da negligência, juntamente com a natureza multifatorial dos comportamentos antissociais, sugere que outras variáveis não controladas podem estar a influenciar a relação investigada. A investigação longitudinal e a inclusão de múltiplas fontes de dados são recomendadas para explorar mais profundamente os mecanismos subjacentes a essa mesma relação.

Despite child neglect being the most prevalent form of child maltreatment, research has focused on studying victimization through physical and sexual abuse, possibly due to difficulties in defining and measuring neglect. Studies have shown that the consequences of child neglect are as serious as those associated with abuse (physical or sexual), contributing to a greater risk of developing psychopathology and exposure to risk factors that harm the child's healthy development. This study aimed to analyze the consequences of neglect during childhood in a sample of 143 male perpetrators serving a prison sentence in a prison establishment. Although previous studies suggest that neglect can have a severe impact, the results found no statistically significant associations between the experience of childhood neglect and antisocial behaviors in this sample. In particular, no statistically significant associations were found between neglect and cognitive functioning. In conclusion, the complexity of neglect, together with the multifactorial nature of antisocial behaviors, suggests that other uncontrolled variables may be influencing the relationship investigated. Longitudinal investigation and the inclusion of multiple data sources are recommended to further explore the mechanisms underlying this same relationship.
