Resumo
Este trabalho procurou analisar o desenvolvimento econômico e social da cidade de Juazeiro do Norte, tendo como fator determinante a religiosidade do povo nordestino, o contexto da contemporaneidade e a abnegação e devoção da figura carismática de Padre Cícero. Ressaltou-se durante a pesquisa de campo a situação do povo nordestino e as características geográficas e sociais das populações daquela região. Também foram focalizados os problemas políticos regionais, as intrigas oligárquicas e eclesiásticas, engendradas no modelo tradicional vigente no Velho Mundo e que chegava ao Nordeste do Brasil ainda nebuloso e carente de uma melhor compreensão. O referido trabalho traz a tona o mito visionário de Padre Cícero. Mostra também como os sertanejos receberam os conceitos pregados por ele, fortalecendo suas convicções a respeito de sua fé e transportando essa convicção para o mundo das realizações produtivas. Fica palpável o crescimento da cidade de Juazeiro, a sequencia de realizações e evento políticos que culminaram com a sedição e emancipação da antiga vila e elevando-a a categoria de cidade. Ficou evidente a importância de Padre Cícero neste processo de crescimento e continuidade do mesmo após sua morte. Já é de domínio público a reaproximação da igreja católica com os eventos passados em Juazeiro na época de Padre Cícero. Hoje se vislumbra por parte da igreja o movimento de reabilitação da figura de Padre Cícero, com documentos oficiais em processo de analise do caso. A religiosidade, o ato das romarias, o comércio de objetos religiosos e profanos, formam um ingrediente promissor desencadeador deste binômio “crescimento e desenvolvimento”
This work sought to analyze the economic and social development of Juazeiro do Norte city, having as a determining factor the religiosity of the northeastern people, the contemporaneousness context and the selflessness and devotion of the charismatic figure of Father Cicero. Emphasis was placed during field research in the situation of the northeastern people and the geographical and social characteristics of the populations of that region. It focused also in regional political problems, oligarchic and ecclesiastical intrigue engendered in the traditional model prevailing in the Old World, which arrived in the Northeast still hazy and lacking a better understanding. This study brings up the visionary myth Father Cicero. It shows also how the country people received the concepts preached by him, strengthening their convictions about faith and carrying this conviction to the world of productive achievements. It is palpable the growth of the city of Juazeiro, the sequence of achievements and political events that culminated with the sedition and emancipation of the old town raising it to the category of city. It was evident the importance of Father Cicero in this process of growth and its continuity even after his death. It is already in the public domain the rapprochement of the Catholic Church with past events in Juazeiro at the time of Father Cicero. Today is envisaged by the church the rehabilitation movement of Father Cicero with official documents in the process of analysis of the case. Religiosity, pilgrimages, trade of religious and profane objects form a promising element triggering this binomial "growth and development".
