This dissertation analyses André Ventura’s political discourse during the televised debates of the 2022 and 2024 legislative elections, aiming to identify the main indicators of radical right-wing populism. Drawing on the theoretical contributions of Mudde, Laclau, and Canovan, it examines the discursive strategies employed by Ventura to construct a dichotomy between the “pure people” and the “corrupt elite,” using polarization, simplification of complex issues, and emotional appeal. The research is based on a qualitative and inductive analysis of the political discourse of the Chega party leader, seeking to demonstrate how his rhetoric fits within the broader framework of contemporary populism. Recurring themes identified in the debates include immigration, security, corruption, and antagonism towards traditional parties. The study also evaluates how Ventura adapts his communication to mobilize public discontent and strengthen his position as an anti-system leader. The analysis reveals a highly emotional and confrontational discourse, marked by direct attacks on opponents and a constant reaffirmation of a nationalist and securitarian identity. The findings suggest that his communicative strategy, by emphasizing the “us vs. them” dichotomy, contributes to political polarization in Portugal. It is concluded that Ventura’s discourse raises questions about the feasibility of his proposals and their implications for democratic stability.
