Endotoxemia is a highly relevant condition in equine medicine, not only because it’s association with gastrointestinal and septic pathologies, which are also substantially prevalent in these animals, but also due to its rapid progression and poor prognosis. The diagnosis and treatment of endotoxemia are time-consuming, associated with substantial economic costs, and may adversely affect equine performance and productivity. These factors underscore the importance of accurate and early diagnosis to reduce mortality, improve prognosis, shorten hospitalization periods, and minimize overall treatment costs. This study presents the preliminary results of a research project that aimed to determine the relevance of the RDW/platelet ratio as a marker of severe inflammation in the diagnosis and prognosis of adult horses with endotoxemia. Thirty-four horses were admitted to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital of the University of Córdoba with clinical signs consistent with endotoxemia. Upon admission, general examinations were performed and blood samples were collected. The ratio value was correlated with RDW, platelet, SAA, and heart rate parameters, as well as with case outcomes, but it wasn't possible to establish any association between these and the outcome of the cases. It should be noted that the results presented here are only preliminary and that the need to define more accurate and early diagnostic methods for endotoxemia in horses encourages further research in this area.
