Resumo
Tomás da Fonseca (1877-1968) fez da adesão a um programa de anticlericalismo militante o seu projecto de vida. Cumpriu-o de maneira radical, persistente e sem desvios, animado pelo propósito de emancipar a sociedade portuguesa da alegada opressão religiosa e clerical. Fascinado pelo ideal do homem novo e da sociedade nova, procurou levá-lo à prática intervindo em três frentes, as frentes política, pedagógica e social. Com essa actuação pretendia varrer da sociedade a presença da Igreja. Entendia que para isso era necessário defender e consolidar a laicidade republicana, promover o ensino laico, e libertar a mulher da subalternidade e da manipulação clerical.
Tomás da Fonseca (1877-1968) made the adhesion to a programme of militant anticlericalism his project of life. He fulfilled it in a radical way, persistently and without digressions, prompted by the purpose of emancipating the Portuguese society from the alleged religious and clerical oppression. Fascinated by the ideal of the new man and the new society, he tried to put it into practice by intervening in three fronts, the political, the pedagogical and the social ones. Acting this way he aimed at sweeping the presence of the Church out of society. To achieve it he believed it was necessary to defend and consolidate the republican laicality, to promote laic teaching and to free the woman from subordination and clerical manipulation.
