O aumento da esperança de vida, considerado uma vitória da humanidade, comporta transformações no indivíduo ao nível bio-psico-social, transformações essas mais evidentes na fase da velhice, pelo que o indivíduo se vai readaptando de acordo com a realidade que o rodeia.
A identidade e representação social da velhice cruzam-se, com auto-percepções e com a representação social que a sociedade em geral vai construindo sobre o envelhecimento e sobre a população nesta fase da vida, num jogo de sobreposição e (re)contrução de imagens.
Este estudo propôs-se compreender, através de uma reflexão teórica e dos discursos dos próprios, o envelhecimento, as percepções dos idosos e suas vivências e as representações sociais que os mesmos consideram existir sobre esta realidade na sociedade portuguesa.
Como parte da relação teoria-prática, o estudo pretende igualmente aprofundar conhecimentos sobre os idosos das Residências Assistidas dos Inválidos do Comércio, e compreender os seus pontos de vista com o intuito de melhorar a intervenção que a autora desenvolve enquanto Assistente Social junto da população idosa nesta instituição.
Esta investigação é de índole qualitativa, elaborada segundo um estudo exploratório-descritivo simples, pelo facto de facultar a recolha de dados de forma mais intensiva, para o que foram aplicadas entrevistas semi-directivas individualizadas a residentes das Residências Assistidas de Inválidos do Comércio.
A interpretação do material recolhido pelas entrevistas permitiu concluir que a identidade da pessoa idosa vai-se (re)construindo no decorrer do seu processo de envelhecimento, sendo que o indivíduo se vai adaptando às alterações e condicionalismos que a vida nesta fase implica. Verificou-se igualmente que os idosos protegem a sua identidade através de estratégias adaptativas, tendo em conta o seu bem-estar e auto-estima, e a imagem que pretendem transmitir aos outros.
De um modo geral, o grupo de idosos entrevistados aceita o seu processo de envelhecimento, contudo, não se identificam com a representação social que os próprios constroem em torno deste, e com o reflexo que captam do pensamento da sociedade.
The growth of live expectancy, being a victory of humankind, brings transformations to the individuals at a bio-psico-social level and these transformations are more visible at an advanced age, the reason why the human being keeps readapting himself according to the reality surrounding him. The identity and social representation of the advanced age coexist with self perceptions and with the image the society, in general, creates about aging and about people in this phase of their lives, in a dynamics of superposition and (re)shaping of images. This study aims to understand through a theoretical reflection and an analysis of their statements, the process of getting older, the older people perceptions and experiences, and the social images that they believe the Portuguese society has of them. As part of the theory / practice relation, the study also aims to deepen the knowledge on the older people living in nursing homes from Inválidos do Comércio, and to understand their points of view with the purpose of improving the intervention the author currently develops as Social Worker in this Institution. This research is qualitative in nature, prepared according to a descriptive exploratory study simple, through an intensive research, in which semi-directive interviews were done to residents of nursing homes. The interpretation of the information collected with the interviews, allowed to conclude that the senior identity is being (re)built during the aging process, considering the individual keeps readapting himself to the changes and conditionings this part of live implies. It was also observed that the seniors tend to protect their welfare and self-esteem and the image they want to show to the others. Generally, the group of seniors who were interviewed accept their process of aging, however, not feeling identified with the social representation they have on being old, as well as with the perspective they think the society has on them.
