Resumo
A presente dissertação intitulada “Deficiência mental e envelhecimento.
familiares.
This dissertation titled “Mental disability and aging. Management strategies of family care for the mentally handicapped” has, as their problematic, aging of people with mental disabilities and their family caregivers. The empirical object of research is the management of family cares, considering strategies, limits and potentialities. With this study, we intend to understand whether the management strategies of family cares, in the context of aging caregivers and their relatives suffering from mental disabilities, are influenced by the formal support received. It was necessary to understand the aging phenomenon of people with disabilities (mental) and their family caregivers; characterize the main caregivers and respective family members with disabilities; realize the management of care in aging situation, dependency and understand family "needs" and its relation with formal cares. To achieve these goals, we adopted a qualitative methodology of comprehensive base, where it was privileged direct contact with family caregivers, using semi directive interviews and quantitative methodology, gauging data and percentage of diagnosed cases and, some data from interviews. In this study, we concluded that families are supported by an institution that provides some services that enhance a relative quality and care management. These strategies change according to incapacity degree, disability and formal supports received, where it can be identified several profiles more proactive than others with respect to care. We can therefore infer that these institutions have to be adapted to current needs of this population group, creating answers to meet people with disabilities and their family caregivers expectations.
