The periodontal disease is a disease that most often affects the canine oral cavity, and the main cause of loss of the teeth in dogs. It starts with the accumulation of bacterial plaque and includes, initially, the presence of gingivitis which, eventually progresses to periodontitis. It is, usually, non-regenerative and incurable disease if plaque accumulation is not controlled. Furthermore, ophthalmic diseases, despite having a high prevalence in the dogs, are not always perceived by the owner. As such, for an early diagnosis to avoid disease progression, is extremely important the execution of a basic eye examination. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of periodontal disease and eye diseases in dogs, in routine exam, in a Lisbon’s referral hospital, during six months. The sample population consisted of 102 domestic dogs without apparent symptoms of oral and ocular problems, which were subject to oral and ophthalmic examination. The hospital-based prevalence was 85,3% for periodontal disease and 31% for eye diseases. This work highlights the relevancy of these two areas as part of the routine examination, and emphasizes the importance of raising public awareness of the implication of these diseases on general animal’s health.
