The present study explores the influence of Cognitive Reserve (CR) on Emotional Recognition (ER) in normative elderly individuals. CR refers to the cognitive ability that allows individuals to mitigate the adverse effects of aging, brain damage, and the onset of neurodegenerative diseases. Twenty-three participants were recruited from a Social Center in Lisbon, aged between 66 and 94 years. The assessment was conducted using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), Cognitive Reserve Questionnaire (CRQ), and Emotional Recognition Assessment (ERA). The results did not reveal a statistically significant relationship between CR and performance in the emotional recognition task. In general, emotions such as joy, anger, disgust, and surprise were well recognized; however, difficulties arose in identifying fear and sadness. The homogeneity of CR levels among the participants in the sample prevented significant comparisons between different CR levels, limiting the understanding of CR's impact on emotional recognition. The study highlights the need for further research to investigate the relationship between cognitive reserve and emotional recognition with larger and more representative samples of this population, to better explore the connection between CR and ER.
