Scala dei (a escada do céu) de Évora : dos monges Cartuxos às irmãs Servidoras do Senhor e da Virgem de Matará

Abstract

A experiência monástica torna-secativante pela sua amplitude, contradições e riqueza. Como é que homens e mulheres, enclausurados(as), voltados para a ascese e a procura de Deus, podem influenciar os seus contemporâneos? Como conseguem aliar a fuga do mundo, procurando o divino? O mosteiro ou convento são lugares privilegiados de mediação espiritual entre dois mundos: este mundo e o mundo do além. A vida monástica apresenta-se como uma “escola” ao serviço do Senhor, que se opõe à escola profana. Procura-se chegar à santidade. Este trabalho, que se insere no âmbito da Ciência das Religiões, procura dar conta da fundação e extinção da Ordem Cartusiana em Évora e da instalação das Irmãs Servidoras do Senhor e da Virgem de Matará.

The monastic experience is captivating because of its breadth, contradictions and richness. How can cloistered men and women, focussed on asceticism and the search for God, influence their contemporaries? How can they combine escape from the world with a search for the divine? The monastery or convent is a privileged place of spiritual mediation between two worlds: this world and the world beyond. Monastic life presents itself as a "school" at the service of the Lord, which is opposed to the profane school. The aim is to attain holiness. This work, which falls within the scope of the Science of Religions, seeks to account for the foundation and extinction of the Carthusian Order in Évora and the installation of the Sisters Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará.
