Prevalência da dirofilariose canina em sete concelhos da região do Algarve

Abstract

A Dirofilariose é uma doença endémica em Portugal, sendo uma das doenças parasitárias do cão com maior relevância do país. Trata-se de uma doença cardiopulmonar provocada pelo nemátode Dirofilaria immitis que tem como microbiótopos principais o ventrículo direito, a artéria pulmonar e veia cava. O cão é o principal hospedeiro, porém pode afetar também o gato e menos frequentemente outras espécies domésticas e selvagens, assim como o Homem. Trata-se portanto de uma parasitose que é uma zoonose e que nos seres humanos se manifesta principalmente pela forma pulmonar. Por ser uma doença transmitida por vetores, o controlo e prevenção dos mosquitos vetores da Dirofilaria immitis é de extrema importância limitando a sua disseminação. Com o presente trabalho pretendeu-se avaliar a prevalência da Dirofilariose em sete concelhos da região do Algarve, nomeadamente Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Olhão, Vila do Bispo, Albufeira e Lagos. Foram analisados 135 animais que se apresentaram para consulta no HVP ao longo do ano de 2016 que apresentaram sintomatologia compatível com dirofilariose ou que fossem iniciar tratamento preventivo da doença. Os métodos de diagnóstico foram o teste de antigénio sérico para Dirofilaria immitis e o esfregaço sanguíneo. Os resultados indicaram prevalência de 15,6% dos animais positivos, sendo 5,9% de Portimão, 5,9% de Lagoa, 2,2% de Lagos e 1,5% de Silves. Nos concelhos de Olhão, Vila do Bispo e Albufeira não se observaram animais positivos. Quanto ao porte dos animais e tipo de habitação, comprovou-se que os animais de porte médio e grande, assim como animais que permaneciam mais tempo no exterior das habitações foram os mais afetados pela parasitose. De acordo com o resultado observado, torna-se fundamental alertar os proprietários para a importância da prevenção da Dirofilariose.

Dirofilariosis is an endemic disease in Portugal, being one of the most important parasitic diseases of the dog in the country. It is a cardiopulmonary disease caused by a nematode, Dirofilaria immitis, which occurs mainly in the right ventricle, pulmonary artery and vena cava, and may affect other organs such as the kidneys and liver. As the dog is the main reservoir of Dirofilaria immitis, it is extremely important to control and prevent this disease in the same, limiting the dissemination of Heartworm disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of heartworm disease in seven counties in the Algarve region, namely Portimão, Lagoa, Silves, Olhão, Vila do Bispo, Albufeira and Lagos. A total of 135 animals that were submitted for consultation at the HVP throughout the year 2016 that presented symptoms compatible with heartworm disease or that were to initiate preventive treatment of the disease were analyzed. Diagnostic methods were the serum antigen test for Dirofilaria immitis and the blood smear. The results indicated a prevalence of 15.6% of positive animals, 5.9% in Portimão, 5.9% in Lagoa, 2.2% in Lagos and 1.5% in Silves. In the municipalities of Olhão, Vila do Bispo and Albufeira no positive animals were observed. Regarding the size of the animals and the type of housing, it was verified that the animals of medium and large size, as well as animals that stayed longer outside the dwellings were the ones most affected by parasitosis. According to the observed result, it becomes essential to alert the owners to the importance of preventing heartworm disease.
