Freud was persuaded that future developments on Biology would bring novelties concerning the explanation of some questions belonging to psychoanalysis; at the same time, he was afraid that the mentioned developments could put psychoanalysis at risk. Both hope of unlimited biological possibilities and fear concerning the future of psychoanalysis are expressed in the article “Beyond pleasure principle” written in 1920. In this paper we intend to question, after all this years, the solidity of both Freudian hopes and fears. To accomplish our aim, we rely on one of the most original and successful investigations on neurobiology field, conducted by António Damásio and his team in the last decades. Psychoanalysis can't be indifferent to the extraordinary developments achieved by them in the last years. It must confront them with new challenges, questioning the results of those neurobiological investigations if it doesn't want to lose the singularity of its theory and practice. We intend, with the present paper, to bring our contribution in that matter.
