A amamentação é a primeira forma de alimentação do recém-nascido, permitindo ao bebé obter todos os nutrientes necessários ao seu desenvolvimento físico e psicológico, contribuindo também para a aquisição de imunidade e o estabelecimento de uma ligação afetiva forte com a mãe.
Existem situações na vida da mulher que conduzem à suspensão da amamentação, sejam elas por desenvolvimento de problemas mamários, por opção própria, ou pela toma de medicamentos.
Ao longo desta dissertação serão descritas todas as características a ter em conta na toma de medicação durante o período de amamentação relativas ao fármaco, à mãe e ao bebé. Também serão abordados os fármacos mais utilizados em doenças frequentes, definindo-se quatro categorias de risco: seguros, moderadamente seguros, potencialmente perigosos e contra-indicados.
Breastfeeding is the first way of feeding the newborn, which permits the baby gets all the Necessary nutrients for their physical and psychological development , as contributes for his immunity and to found a strong emotional relationship with the mother. There are situations in women's lives that lead to the breastfeeding suspension, namely, the development of breast problems, by mother choice, or the mother necessity of take drugs. There is still little information on the use of drugs during the breastfeeding period, both by women as health professionals, often leading to inappropriate suspension of breastfeeding. When a breastfeeding woman requires the administration of drugs, should be evaluated the drug characteristics , the drug percentage which passes through the breast milk and adverse effects that could aris e from, evaluat the relation risk vs benefit. Throughout this dissertation will describe all the features to consider in taking drugs during the breastfeeding period, related to drug, to the mother and the baby. The drugs often used in common diseases will be discussed, defining four categories of risk: insurance, moderately safe, potentially dangerous and contraindicated.
