Adaptation to higher education (AHE) involves relevant academic, social, and emotional challenges, especially for first-year students. Mentoring programs (MPs) have been identified as effective interventions in promoting academic success and personal development. This study examined the role of emotional intelligence (EI) in AHE, exploring self-esteem and flourishing as potential serial mediators, and participation in the MP as a possible moderator. The sample consists of 267 psychology students (83.9% women), aged between 17 and 35 (M = 19.64; SD = 3.17), of whom 77.5% participated in the MP. Self-report instruments were completed at the beginning of the first (T1) and second (T2) semesters, assessing EI, AHE, self-esteem, flourishing, and sociodemographic variables. The results demonstrated that self-esteem and flourishing partially mediated the relationship between EI and AHE, with stronger effects at T2 (abcds = .10; 95% bootCI [.05, .17]). Participation in the MP moderated the association between flourishing and AHE, with the effect being stronger among students who did not participate in the program. The results highlight the importance of emotional and institutional resources in the process of adaptation to higher education, suggesting the development of more effective university interventions for AHE.
