Tuberculose no final do século XIX em Portugal

Abstract

A luta contra a tuberculose no mundo é um exemplo de como um enorme esforço conjunto da humanidade se mostra insuficiente para vencer um mal aparentemente ao seu alcance. No final do século XIX, a tuberculose ganha protagonismo como uma das grandes pandemias, acompanhando o seu acréscimo de perto a revolução industrial. Espalhando-se por todo o mundo através da exploração e colonização mas descobrindo-se também o seu agente causador, por Robert Koch em 1882. Esta pandemia perpassa todo o seculo XX e, apesar de a ciência ter conseguido neste século os meios para vencer este flagelo, medicamentos seguros e eficazes e também o conhecimento pleno da sua propagação, entra mesmo assim, pelo sédulo XXI, ainda como um dos problemas de saúde pública com maior repercussão em todo o globo. A presente dissertação foca-se na análise da passagem da tuberculose por Portugal no final do seculo XIX, como chegou, como se propagou, como tornou-se uma das maiores pandemias no nosso país mas também no mundo inteiro.

The fight against tuberculosis in the world is an example of how a huge combined effort of humanity, shows insufficient to defeat an apparently easy evil. In the end of XIX century, the tuberculosis wins a spotlight as one of the biggest pandemics, watching their growth the industrial revolution. The tuberculosis spread around the world through the exploration and colonization, but also was discovered her causative agent, by Robert Koch in 1882. This pandemic pervades the entire XX century, and although the science had achieved in this century, the methods to triumph against this scourge, the safe and effective drugs, and also the knowledge of how the tuberculosis spread, this disease, enter in the XXI century, still as one of the health problems with great impact in the entire world. This thesis focus in the analysis of the passage of tuberculosis through Portugal in the end of the XIX century, how arrived, how it spread, how it became one of the biggest pandemics of our country but also in the entire world.
