Resumo
Mental health-related stigma leads people to conceal their diagnoses to avoid discrimination, negatively affecting their lives. Understanding the patterns of these factors is crucial for developing effective responses. This study aimed to identify subgroups within the population regarding concealment of mental health problems, personal experiences of discrimination, perceptions of group discrimination and social stigma. It was conducted with 389 adults (86.6% female) from 18 to 76 years old (M=35.7, SD=14.0), using an online survey with indices of Identity Concealment, Personal and Group Discrimination, and the Attribution Questionnaire. Cluster analysis was performed and identified three subgroups: “Self-protectors”, demonstrating high concealment, and low personal discrimination, group discrimination and social stigma; “Stigmatizers”, revealing moderate concealment, personal discrimination and group discrimination, and high social stigma; and “At Risk”, exhibiting low concealment, high personal and group discrimination, and moderate social stigma. Results further showed that “Self-protectors” has the highest prevalence of mental health problems, while “Stigmatizers” has the lowest. Findings highlight the heterogeneity of attitudes towards mental health and the impact that experiences can have on fostering social stigma. Implications for interventions to reduce stigma and increase mental health literacy are discussed, which should be tailored to particular target groups.
