A mais-valia deste
Social and family structural changes are increasingly challenging fathers and mothers to perform their parenting roles. One of the main consequences is the high demand placed on parents, which may impact their well-being and self-efficacy, and even the existence of some criticism related to how parents perform this "function". In turn, there is also an inequality in the demands and functions performed by female and male parents, with mothers tending to be more affected by these social pressures associated with being a "good mother" and the fear that they will not fulfil this role. The present study aims to explore fathers' and mothers' perceptions of what "good" and "bad" fathers and mothers mean to them, separately, and to see if there are differences in parenting attributes by gender. 160 fathers and mothers, aged between 18 and 73 years old participated in the study. The data were collected using an online questionnaire with open-ended questions, and a content analysis of the answers was performed. The most significant results found for perceptions of what a good mother is, was the Emotional Support category, for perceptions of what a bad mother is the most mentioned category was Negative Parenting Practices. For perceptions of what a good father is the most mentioned category was also Emotional Support and for the category of what a bad father is the most mentioned was Disinvestment. The results regarding mothers' perceptions are close to the concept of intensive motherhood, while the perceptions of the father figure attributes reveal an evolution in parenting skills, especially emotional support. The added value of this study lies in contributing new knowledge and tools regarding parenting to be used in a therapeutic context.
