No estudo observacional
Objective: The main objective of this dissertation was to analyze the association between physical activity and academic performance in university students. Method: This dissertation presents two studies: The first was a systematic review of the literature that summarizes the scientific knowledge on the association between physical activity and academic performance in university students. The second study is a crosssectional observational study, with 521 Portuguese university students who completed an online questionnaire about sociodemographic status, physical activity level (International Physical Activity Questionnaire) and academic performance. Results: In the systematic review of the literature, seven studies were considered eligible and selected to be included in the review. Two studies (28.6%) reported direct positive associations between physical activity and academic performance, two studies (28.6%) present an inverse analysis between variables reporting positive associations between academic performance and physical activity, and finally three studies (42.8%) did not report associations between physical activity and academic performance. In the cross-sectional observational study, no statistically significant differences were found between physical activity groups for academic performance (men p=0,525; women p=0,817), nor physical activity was a significant predictor of high academic performance (p> 0.05). Conclusions: Analyzing the studies that integrated the systematic review of the literature, it is verified that the results are inconsistent and inconclusive, as there is no evidence pointing in one single direction. As for the observational study, the results corroborate three other studies analyzed in the systematic review of the literature that had verified that there was no association between physical activity and academic performance. With this, it is concluded that more research is need to clarify the nature of the association between physical activity and academic performance, considering the limitations found in the present dissertation, as described in the manuscripts one and two.
