O objetivo geral desta investigação é conhecer as necessidades, expectativas e dificuldades dos adultos com deficiência intelectual e das suas famílias, no contexto das respostas institucionais existentes. No enquadramento teórico, abordam-se problemáticas relacionadas com o aumento da longevidade nas pessoas adultas com deficiência intelectual, através da articulação dos conceitos de envelhecimento e deficiência intelectual nas sociedades contemporâneas. A investigação empírica realizada é um estudo de natureza exploratória, com recurso a técnicas de recolha e análise de dados qualitativas. Foram realizadas entrevistas individuais a cuidadores de familiares com deficiência intelectual, bem como a técnicos da Cercica. O material empírico recolhido, através das entrevistas, foi analisado através de análise de conteúdo. Na primeira parte da apresentação dos resultados identificam-se as necessidades emergentes dos cuidadores familiares, em três problemáticas: a do familiar dependente, a do cuidador e a das estratégias familiares de resposta à longevidade dos adultos com deficiência intelectual. Na segunda parte, é possível conhecer a perspetiva institucional, mais concretamente, interrogar a capacidade de resposta da instituição (Cercica) às necessidades emergentes dos utentes adultos com deficiência intelectual e dos seus cuidadores.
The main purpose of this research is to find out the needs, expectations and difficulties of adults with intellectual disability and those of their families in the context of the existing institutional responses. In the theoretical framework we discuss the questions related the longevity of adults having intellectual disability by examining the interaction of the concepts of ageing and of intellectual disability within the contemporary societies. This empirical research is an exploratory study which collects and analysis qualitative data. Individual interviews to family carers as well as to the professionals (Cercica) of the institution took place. The empirical data collected through the interviews has been examined by a content analysis. In the first part of the results presentation, the emergent needs of the family carers are identified in three theoretical problems: that of the dependent family member, that of the family carer and that of the family strategies in answer to the longevity of the adults with intellectual disability. In the second part we find out the institutional perspective, more specifically the capacity of the institution (Cercica) to answer to the emergent needs of the adults with intellectual disabilities and their family carers.
