Tourism planning is a fundamental activity to promote and achieve the sustainable development of tourist destinations. In this sense, in order to promote tourism in local territories and, at the same time, promote the development of their respective communities, tourism professionals working at local level need to have expertise in the field of tourism planning. In this perspective, the present dissertation was developed with the main objective of analyzing and understanding the relevance of higher education in tourism for the effectiveness and competence of tourism professionals in the execution of their practical activities in the local territories where they carry out their activity. To this end, a study was planned and conducted in which a questionnaire survey was administered to teachers of tourism courses who train professionals who work in the planning and management of tourism and to professionals who work in operational tourism planners. The information collected through the questionnaires was analyzed using statistical strategies, using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS). Among the main results, it has been found that tourism courses that form professionals in tourism planning appear to be adequate in terms of content. However, it has also been found that tourism training, particularly with regard to contents related to tourism planning, needs to include more practical activities in order to promote closer approximation to reality, which can be done through collaboration with operators Touristic.
