Nanotechnology is a multidisciplinary science that optimizes the properties of the matter and involves the development of systems in a scale of nanometers. The application of nanotechnology in medicine and cosmetics emerges as a field of research that is generating an increasing interest. Nanotechnology, applied to the treatment of common skin diseases has made progress, mainly in the topical treatment of acne that has benefited from the advancement of this technology. Acne results from multiple pathogenic factors and affects 75 % to 95 % of adolescents and causes them physical and psychological disorders. However, despite being a characteristic disease of adolescence, acne is also prevalent in a small population of women aged over 40 years. In this dissertation, an approach to the pathogenesis of acne was made, which was helpful in the compression of the objectives of topical, systemic and physical treatment of acne. The basics of nanotechnology were further explored to understand its contribution to medicine and cosmetics applied to the treatment of acne. Different research papers in the area were analyzed and their application to topical treatment of acne was evaluated.
