BIBLIOGRAPHIC REVIEW
In this internship report the subject of surgical correction of radius and ulna diaphyseal fractures in miniature breeds using external skeletal fixation is addressed, as well as the topics of ossification and bone healing because they are of high importance for any correction applicable to lesions of the musculoskeletal system. This study aimed to explore the advantages and disadvantages of external skeletal fixation techniques, as well as the feasibility of their application in veterinary medicine when compared to other techniques. For this purpose, a literature review of the various techniques applied in diaphyseal fractures of the radius and ulna in veterinary medicine was performed, in order to conclude which will be the advantage of the external skeletal fixation in comparison to other techniques. This paper describes four clinical cases of application of external skeletal fixation, observed and followed by the author, in order to have a better understanding of the reality of this treatment and its implications. The author concludes that external skeletal fixation is a very versatile method that adapts to the anatomical variability present in the canine species, allowing the use of closed reduction with the consequent advantages of preserving vascularization of the bone, periosteum and surrounding tissues, enabling relatively quick clinical unions, and finally it is especially indicated in contaminated fractures and those with high comminution. Keywords: radius; ulna; external fixation; ossification; bone healing; miniature
