Fatores etiológicos do cancro : perspetiva de uma amostra da população portuguesa

Abstract

O cancro é a segunda maior causa de mortalidade em Portugal e no mundo, englobando um conjunto de doenças bastante complexas e multifatoriais. O investimento global na investigação oncológica, tem vindo a intensificar-se, com o objetivo de aprofundar a compreensão da sua etiologia, para melhorar a prevenção e aumentar as opções terapêuticas. Os fatores etiológicos do cancro são responsáveis por induzir mutações no ADN celular e podem ser classificados como genéticos ou ambientais. Os fatores genéticos estão associados à hereditariedade, enquanto os fatores ambientais incluem a dieta, exposição a agentes tóxicos ou radiação, infeções, consumo de tabaco e álcool, existência de doenças crónicas, obesidade, sedentarismo ou toma de alguns medicamentos. Tendo em conta a elevada importância da literacia em saúde, em particular no domínio da prevenção oncológica, o presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o nível de conhecimento e o interesse da população portuguesa relativamente aos fatores etiológicos do cancro. Para tal, realizou-se um estudo observacional, transversal, com a aplicação de um questionário. A amostra foi constituída por 118 participantes, que demonstraram, de forma geral, um bom conhecimento acerca dos principais fatores de risco, embora com algumas lacunas no conhecimento específico sobre alguns agentes presentes na dieta. Os resultados deste estudo reforçam a necessidade da existência de estratégias educativas contínuas e sustentadas, com vista à capacitação das populações para a adoção de comportamentos preventivos e informados, contribuindo para a redução do impacto do cancro na sociedade.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in Portugal and worldwide and comprises a number of highly complex and multifactorial diseases. Increased investment in cancer research is being made worldwide to deepen understanding of its etiology, improving prevention and increasing therapeutic options. The etiological factors of cancer are responsible for triggering mutations in cellular DNA and can be classified as genetic or environmental factors. Genetic factors are associated with heredity, while environmental factors include diet, exposure to toxic substances or radiation, infections, tobacco and alcohol consumption, chronic diseases, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle or the use of certain medications. Given the importance of health literacy, particularly in the area of cancer prevention, the aim of this study was to investigate the level of knowledge and interest of the Portuguese population in the etiological factors of cancer. To this end, an observational and cross-sectional study was conducted using a questionnaire. The sample consisted of 118 participants who generally demonstrated good knowledge of the main risk factors, although there were some gaps in their specific knowledge of certain agents present in the diet. The results of this study reinforce the need for continuous and sustained educational strategies aimed at empowering the population to adopt preventive and informed behaviours, thus helping to reduce the impact of cancer on society.
