Quality is the basis for the success of organisations, being a factor that distinguishes them from others. In the context of the food sector in Portugal, the focus on quality is also an increasingly important factor to be taken into account. Thus, this dissertation aims to analyse the benefits and motivations of the application of the ISO 9001 standard in food sector companies. The following questions were sought to be answered: Q1 - What leads a company to opt for ISO 9001 certification? Q2 - In what way is ISO 9001 certification an added value for companies? In other words, to present some facts that allow us to verify that the system effectively brings benefits to the organisation, in order to prove its effectiveness. In order to respond to the proposed objective, an online questionnaire was applied at a national level to a total of 70 companies from the food sector, certified ISO 9001, and 43 answers were obtained. The treatment of the data was carried out using the SPSS Statistics programme. This analysis allowed us to conclude that the main factors that lead managers to certify these companies are compliance with customer requirements, the decision of top management, increased productivity and/or efficiency, increased profitability, reduction of rejections and/or customer complaints, reduction of internal costs and improved quality of products and/or services. This analysis of the results also allowed us to conclude which are the main benefits considered most relevant by the companies, namely, improvement in product quality, increase in productivity and/or efficiency, improvement in company image, improvement in internal processes and procedures, increase in profitability, increase in company competitiveness, improvement in customer satisfaction and reduction in rejections and complaints.
