During periods of human development marked by vulnerability, such as childhood or early adolescence, the child/adolescent can be exposed to stressors in a repetitive and prolonged manner over time, which is referred to as complex trauma. The literature suggests the impact of this type of trauma on the child's ability to self-regulate, develop a sense of self-integrity, and its effect on the development of maladaptive schemas. The present study is quantitative with a cross-sectional design, collected from a sample of the Portuguese community (N=86), with correlational and predictive characteristics. Data collection was carried out online through a shared link, using a snowball method, which directed participants to the instrument protocol. The results obtained in this study allowed for the exploration of associations between complex trauma and dialectical core schemas (DCS) (maladaptive and adaptive), and between this type of trauma and emotional regulation techniques. Furthermore, it was possible to study the associations between DCS (adaptive and maladaptive) and emotional regulation techniques. The study demonstrated the predictive value of complex trauma experiences (10%) and specifically of emotional neglect (9%), as well as of maladaptive self-schemas (12%) in the use of emotional suppression. Lastly, the present study allowed for the investigation of the predictive value of DCS on symptomatology (38%), distress (28%), and well-being (41%)
