Resumo
As doenças cardiovasculares e os antioxidantes, tema desta dissertação, foram
estudados com o intuito de compreender a relação entre o consumo e administração oral dos
antioxidantes na prevenção das doenças cardiovasculares, já que estas constituem a maior
causa de morte a nível mundial. Estes dados preocupam os decisores e autoridades de Saúde,
em especial se considerarmos que os fatores de risco que se encontram associados a estas
doenças, podem na quase maioria ser modificados.
Os antioxidantes encontram-se em diferentes formas nos alimentos, cujas
propriedades de evitar os danos oxidativos nas células têm sido estudadas em estudos clínicos,
observacionais e epidemiológicos. Os diferentes estudos realizados têm permitido mostrar a
relação benéfica entre estas propriedades antioxidantes e a prevalência das doenças
cardiovasculares.
Cardiovascular diseases and antioxidants, the subject of this dissertation, were studied in order to understand the relationship between consumption and oral administration of antioxidants in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, since these are the major cause of death worldwide. These data are of concern to health decision makers and authorities, especially if we consider that the risk factors associated with these diseases can in most cases be modified. Antioxidants are found in different forms in foods, whose properties of avoiding the oxidative damage to cells have been studied in clinical, observational and epidemiological studies. The different studies have shown the beneficial relationship between these antioxidant properties and the prevalence of cardiovascular diseases.
