This study aimed to develop a welfare protocol for dairy calves. Aiming to establish a welfare assessment system for dairy calves by analyzing different indicators. To this end, a questionnaire was developed, divided into four distinct assessment parameters: birth, housing, nutrition, and health. Each evaluated criterion had an associated score, culminating in a final welfare score for the evaluated farm. The study included both female and male calves, from birth to the weaning period (approximately 12 to 14 weeks), born between July 2023 and February 2024. A total of 421 calves (141 males and 280 females) were included in the study, covering 20 farms in total. Among the studied farms, none reached the level of excellence, nor were any classified as "not classified" or "basic." Instead, they were categorized as either "sufficient" or "good." The score obtained by the protocol was compared to the mortality rate of the calves. It was found that the two variables are not easily relatable, with no significant correlation identified between them.
