Esses resultados serão discutidos reconhecendo-se o papel da personalidade na etiologia e manutenção da FM.Item Family rituals in pediatric epilepsy : links to parental competence and adaptation.(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2018) Mendes, Teresa Paula Gameiro Pompeu; Crespo, Carla Alexandra Mesquita; Austin, Joan; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThis cross-sectional study examined the associations between family ritual meaning and 3 indicators of parental adaptation (anxious and depressive symptoms and quality of life) via 2 dimensions of parental competence-satisfaction and efficacy-in parents of children with epilepsy. Two hundred Portuguese parents of children diagnosed with epilepsy for at least 6 months completed self-report measures assessing the main study variables. Our results showed that when parents reported stronger family ritual meaning, they also reported higher levels of parental satisfaction and efficacy, which were in turn were associated with lower psychological distress (anxious and depressive symptoms) and better quality of life of parents. This pattern of results was significant regardless of the severity of children's epilepsy, age group, and family socioeconomic level. In the context of pediatric epilepsy, empirical evidence was found for the role of family ritual meaning in being directly and indirectly associated with parents' adaptation outcomes by higher levels of parental satisfaction and efficacy. Focusing intervention targets on what families naturally do and recognize as their own ritual meaning may be a favorable route to address those at risk of psychological distress and lower quality of life.Item Spiritual Intelligence Self-Assessment Inventory : psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of SISRI-24(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2018) Antunes, Roque Rodrigues; Silva, Ana Paula Lopes da; Oliveira, Jorge; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsSpiritual intelligence has gained increasing importance as an academic construct in the field of psychology. We present the psychometric properties for the Portuguese adaptation of the Spiritual Intelligence Self-Report Inventory-24, SISRI-24. The exploratory analysis showed a factorial structure different from the original scale, comprising three factors instead of four as in the original version, in which “Transcendental Awareness” was removed. The confirmatory factorial analysis revealed adjustment to a three-factor model for the Portuguese version. The main indexes of adjustment are generally better than the original four-factor version, suggesting the adequacy of this solution for the Portuguese population. The analysis with the convergent measures (SWBQ and MPWQ) provides evidence of the construct’s validity and criterion. The results are promising, allowing us to proceed with the uses of this tool for measuring spiritual intelligence, which may, however, be improved in the future.Item Family management of pediatric cancer: Links with parenting satisfaction and psychological distress(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2018) Salvador, Ágata; Crespo, Carla Alexandra Mesquita; Barros, Luísa; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsResearch has long acknowledged the disruptions posed by pediatric cancer diagnosis and treatment to family life. Nonetheless, the mechanisms through which the family response influences parents’ mental health in this adverse context are not fully understood. The main goal of the present study was to examine the direct and indirect links, via parenting satisfaction, between family condition management and psychological distress of parents of children with cancer. Participants were 201 parents (86.6% mothers) of children/adolescents diagnosed with cancer who completed selfreport questionnaires assessing family condition management (family life difficulty and parental mutuality), parenting satisfaction and psychological distress (anxiety and depression). Structural equation modeling was used to test the proposed mediation model. The results showed that parenting satisfaction mediated the association between both the family condition management dimensions (family life difficulty and parental mutuality) and depression. Specifically, greater family life difficulties and lower parental mutuality were associated with lower parenting satisfaction, which, in turn, was associated with higher levels of depression. Additionally, greater family life difficulties and lower parental mutuality were directly linked to higher levels of anxiety. Multigroup analyses suggested that the model was valid across patient age groups (children vs. adolescents) and treatment status (on vs. off-treatment). These findings reinforce the need for family- and parent-based interventions in the pediatric oncology field. Interventions that target families’ difficulties and promote their resources are likely to foster parenting satisfaction and psychological adjustment.Item Individual Differences in Working Memory Abilities in Healthy Adults(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2018-02-13) Morais, Rui M.; Pera, M. V.; Ladera Fernández, Valentina; Oliveira, Jorge; García, Ricardo; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThe goal of this study was to understand the role of individual characteristics such as age, gender and education of healthy adults on working memory abilities, as conceptualized in the central executive, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad. The sample comprised 302 adults aged from 18 to 65 with different educational backgrounds. Participants were submitted to a protocol of established neuropsychological tests that were selected to assess the central executive, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad. The results revealed that these factors influenced working memory abilities differentially. Education level influenced all the three components in the same direction. Individuals with higher academic qualifications have better performance in tests assessing the central executive, phonological loop, and visuospatial sketchpad, whereas age affected performance in the task evaluating the central executive. Age and gender also influenced the performance in tasks related to visuospatial sketchpad in the sense that younger individuals or men reveal better visual and spatial abilities as conceptual- ized in the visuospatial sketchpad.Item Development and validation of the Portuguese version of the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale(Spanish Society for the Study of Anxiety and Stress (SEAS), 2018-07-01) Santos, Isabel F.; Machado, Paulo P.P.; Esteves, Francisco; Escola de Psicologia e Ciências da Vida; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThis article presents the psychometric properties for the Portuguese population of a brief self-report scale for diagnosing anorexia nervosa (AN), bulimia nervosa (BN), and binge-eating disorder (BED): the Eating Disorder Diagnostic Scale (Stice et al., 2000). Method: To study the psychometric properties of EDDS, an exploratory factor analysis was done first, followed by a confirmatory factor analysis. Results: The results of the exploratory factor analysis revealed the existence of three components and the confirmatory factor analysis showed a structure with three latent variables (Body and Weight Concerns, Binge Eating Behaviour and Compensatory Behaviours), with a second order variable (Eating Disorder Symptoms) with a good adjustment fit. The internal consistency and the test–retest correlations revealed an adequate reliability and the inter-correlations of the EDDS subscales with other measures of the same and different constructs, supported the convergent and discriminant validity of this measure. Conclusions: Summing up, the EDDS seems to be a useful measure to assess eating disorders symptomatology in the Portuguese population.Item Academic procrastination : psychological impact and predictor aspects under the self-determination theory(Asociación Española de Psicología Conductual (AEPC), 2019) Pereira, Janaina Fagundes Silva Morgado; Gonzalez, Bárbara Isabel Dinis; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsBackground: Academic procrastination is a dynamic phenomenon involving personal, behavioral and environmental aspects and is characterized by delaying the beginning or the ending of an academic task, in a purposeful and frequent way. As such, it generates a subjective discomfort associated with negative psychological consequences in students. Very few studies have investigated procrastination within the frame of the self determination theory, and specifically in the context of basic psychological needs satisfaction. This study aims to explore the relation among academic procrastination, basic psychological needs satisfaction, coping strategies (with a focus on proactive coping), and depression, anxiety and stress. Methods: 211 university students with ages between 18 and 44 years (M = 24.23; DP = 5.72), most of them being females (56.4%), have participated in this transversal study, and fulfilled the Questionnaire of Procrastination in Study, the Basic Psychologic Needs Satisfaction Scale, the Questionnaire of Reactions to Daily Events and the Scale of Anxiety, Depression and Stress-21. Results: The correlation analysis verified that academic procrastination has a negative relation with basic psychological needs satisfaction, and proactive coping, and a positive relation with avoidance coping, and with anxiety, depression and stress. A mediation analysis identified proactive coping as a partial mediator of the relation between basic psychological needs satisfaction and procrastination. Conclusion: The non-satisfaction of the basic psychological needs in students is related to the usage of less adaptative coping strategies, and seems to prevent the use of more effective proactive strategies. On the other hand, those strategies lead to procrastination, which has a negative psychological impact. As such, an intervention based on the satisfaction of the basic psychological needs in the academic context is considered relevantItem Parents’ psychological well-being when a child has cancer: Contribution of individual and family factors(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019) Salvador, Ágata; Crespo, Carla Alexandra Mesquita; Barros, Luísa; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsObjective: The aim of the present study was to examine the contribution of individual (positive reappraisal) and family factors (parenting satisfaction, couple relationship quality, and family life difficulty) to the psychological well-being of parents of children/adolescents diagnosed with cancer. Method: This cross-sectional study was conducted at two pediatric oncology wards in Portugal. Two-hundred and five parents of pediatric cancer patients completed self-report questionnaires assessing the use of positive reappraisal as a coping strategy (Ways of Coping Questionnaire), parenting satisfaction (Parenting Sense of Competence Scale), relationship quality (Perceived Relationship Quality Components Inventory), family life difficulty (Family Management Measure), and psychological well-being (Ryff’s Psychological Well-being scales). Sociodemographic and clinical data were also assessed. Results: Standard multiple regression analysis showed a significant contribution of both individual and family-level factors to parents’ psychological well-being. Specifically, the use of positive reappraisal as a coping strategy, parenting satisfaction, and relationship quality were associated with higher psychological well-being; conversely, family life difficulty was linked to lower psychological well-being. Conclusions: The findings of this study provide an important contribution to the identification of parents at higher risk for poor psychological well-being. Screening and addressing both individual- and family-level aspects may be crucial to foster parents’ mental health when a child is diagnosed with an oncological disease.Item Energy-Saving Behavior: the Different Roles of Altruism and of Environmentalism(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019) Loureiro, Ana Luisa Cardoso Marques Teixeira; Lima, Maria Luisa; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThis experimental study, in which 118 university students participated, addresses how environmental and altruistic cues induce energy-saving behavior and intention, and their interaction with environmental and altruistic values, thus testing the influence of context or situational variables in energy-saving behavior and intention. Additionally, it does an empirical approach to the role that environmental and altruistic values may have as individual predictors of energy-saving. Environmental and altruistic situational cues are operationalized by environment and altruism conceptual priming. The results reveal an interaction between situational variables and personal values: environment priming induced more energysaving behavior among individuals with lower altruistic values. The same effect is not observed for energy-saving intention. When the environment and altruism priming were present, individuals with lower altruistic values had less energy-saving intentions. These results underline the importance of distinguishing environmental and altruistic frames and motives when explaining energy-saving behavior. Item The benefits of family-centered care for parental self-efficacy and psychological well- being in parents of children with cancer(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019) Salvador, Ágata; Crespo, Carla Alexandra Mesquita; Barros, Luísa; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsObjectives The purpose of this study was to examine the direct and indirect links between the perception of family-centeredcare (FCC) and psychological well-being via the perceived self-efficacy of parents of children with cancer. This study alsosought to identify the potential moderators of these links (treatment status and patient age). Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted at the pediatric oncology wards of two Portuguese public hospitals. Theconsecutive sample comprised 251 parents (87.6% mothers) of children/adolescents (8−20 years old) diagnosed with cancer.Participants completed self-report questionnaires measuring their perception of family-centered care (family-centered ser-vices and providing general information), perceived self-efficacy (regarding healthcare and parenting role) and psychologicalwellbeing. Results Results from the Structural Equation Modeling suggested that parents’perception of FCC was indirectly, but notdirectly, linked to psychological well-being via perceived self-efficacy. Multi-group analyses suggested that this mediationmodel was valid across treatment status (on vs. off-treatment) and patient age groups (children vs. adolescents). Conclusions These findings highlighted that, through the implementation of FCC, healthcare professionals may promoteparents’perceived self-efficacy and, consequently, their psychological well-being. Results also suggest that FCC mayequally operate on parents’psychosocial functioning, regardless of treatment status or patient age. Overall, our findingsreinforced the benefits of FCC practices in pediatric oncology wards.Item Fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis: Personality and psychopathology differences from the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019) Gonzalez, Bárbara Isabel Dinis; Novo, Rosa Ferreira; Peres, Rodrigo; Baptista, Telmo Ventura Mourinho; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThe fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic widespread pain condition whose etiology remains unknown. Within a psychosocial approach to FM, personality may play a role as predisposing and/or maintaining factor. A meta-analytic study has identified a distinct Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) clinical profile between FM female patients and healthy controls, but the differences between FM and other chronic pain conditions with clear etiology are not established. This cross-sectional study compares the clinical MMPI-2 profile in FM and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, identifies typical groups of each pathology, and further characterizes these groups in the broad MMPI-2 personality and psychopathology dimensions. The MMPI-2 scales were assessed in a sample of 70 women (FM: n = 38, Mage = 46.03, SDage = 8.48; RA: n = 32, Mage = 45.31, SDage = 8.68). The FM group had clinically significant elevations on five clinical scales (Hypochondriasis, Depression, Hysteria, Psychasthenia and Schizophrenia), while RA group had none. A K-Means cluster analysis allowed the identification of a typical profile of each pathology, and subsequent MANCOVAs identified important features of FM patients on several MMPI-2 dimensions. We conclude there is specificity in the personality and psychopathology characteristics of FM patientsItem Social comparison in parents of children with chronic conditions: Results from the Portuguese version of the Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure.(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019) Mendes, Teresa Paula Gameiro Pompeu; Crespo, Carla Alexandra Mesquita; Buunk, Abraham; Marôco, João; Austin, Joan; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThe Iowa-Netherlands Comparison Orientation Measure (INCOM) is a measure for assessing individual differences in social comparison orientation. Despite the relevance of social comparison orientation in understanding adult patients' adjustment responses to chronic health conditions, the impact of parental social comparison processes in the context of chronic pediatric conditions remains unexplored. This study’s main goal was to examine the psychometric properties of the Portuguese version of the INCOM with parents of children with chronic health conditions. Method: Two samples of parents of children with chronic pediatric conditions (asthma, epilepsy, diabetes and obesity) were used (test sample, N = 301; validation sample, N = 192). Parents completed self-reported measures of social comparison orientation, anxiety and depression symptoms and neuroticism. Results: Regarding factorial validity, results supported the unidimensionality of a revised INCOM scale, comprised of nine items. Results also supported the reliability of the measure, and provided evidence of concurrent validity: parents with higher social comparison orientation presented more anxiety and depressive symptoms, and higher neuroticism scores, consistent with what was theoretically expected. Conclusion: This study opens an important door in the field of pediatric chronic conditions, supporting the relevance of examining parents’ social comparison differences in future research, and the utility of the INCOM in the assessment of those differences.Item Fibromyalgia: heterogeneity in personality and psychopathology and its implications(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019) Gonzalez, Bárbara Isabel Dinis; Novo, Rosa Ferreira; Ferreira, Ana Sousa; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsThe fibromyalgia syndrome (FM) is a chronic widespread pain con dition whose etiology remains unknown and no treatment hassatisfactory levels of success. A meta-analysis has identified a distinct Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 (MMPI-2) clinical profile between FM female patients and healthy controls, and differences between FM and other chronic pain condition with clear etiology have also been found. However, heterogeneity in this population has been suggested in several studies. We aim to assess clinical aspects in FM patients, based on personality psychopathol ogy characteristics, in order to explore heterogeneity and the exis tence of core common aspects. In this cross-sectional study, a relatively homogeneous sample of 56 female FM patients (Mage = 45.95, SDage = 9.39) was assessed through MMPI-2. A K-Means cluster analysis identified two clusters, one (n = 24) with clinically significant levels in Negative Emotionality and Introversion scales. Subsequent MANOVAs identified important features of this cluster on several MMPI-2 dimensions. Moreover, several dimensions are clinically elevated in both clusters. In conclusion, the combination of psychopathological negative emotionality, interpersonal isola tion, and low hedonic capacity, in a group of patients, has implica tions for the daily living and treatment of FM patients, and several core aspects of FM need to be addressed. Item Eye-tracking — uma técnica de ponta para investigar o desempenho e as emoções no desporto?(Climepsi, 2019) Esteves, Pedro Tiago; Rosa, Pedro Joel; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsItem Cognitive Stimulation of Elderly Individuals with Instrumental Virtual Reality-Based Activities of Daily Life(2019-01-01) Gamito, Pedro; Oliveira, Jorge; Morais, Diogo; Coelho, Cátia; Santos, Nuno; Alves, Catarina; Galamba, Ana; Soeiro, Miguel; Brito, Rodrigo; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsAs the demographic structure in western societies ages, the prevalence and impact of cognitive decline rises. Thus, new solutions to tackle this problem are required. The use of Information and Communication Tech- nologies (ICT)-based cognitive exercises has emerged in the last few decades, though with inconsistent results. Hence, we conducted a pre-post treatment study to further investigate this approach. We designed a set of virtual reality exercises that mimic activities of daily living by which the patient can train different cognitive domains. Twenty-five participants, ages 65–85, underwent 12 training sessions between the pre-treatment and post-treatment assessments. Significant increases were seen between the two assessments for some of the neuropsychological measures: visual memory, attention, and cognitive flexibility. Results also suggest that participants with lower baseline cognitive performance levels improved most after these sessions.Item The prevalence of Bi-Directional intimate partner violence reported by Portuguese men(Edições Universitárias Lusófonas, 2019-03-01) Machado, Andreia; Santos, Ariana; Graham-Kevan, Nicola; Matos, Marlene; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsItem Psychometric and Rash Analysis of the UCLA Loneliness Scale-16 in a Portuguese Sample of Older Adults(Springer International Publishing, 2019-06-01) Faustino, Bruno; Lopes, Paulo; Oliveira, Jorge; Campaioli, Giulia; Rondinone, Maria; Bomfim, Helena; Germano, Lindanuza; Escola de Psicologia e Ciências da Vida; Faculdade de Psicologia, Educação e Desporto; HEI-LAB (FCT) - Digital Laboratories for Environments and Human InteractionsLoneliness is a serious concern in modern societies, particularly among older adults, while being imperative that clinicians use reliable instruments for an accurate assessment of this problem. This study aims to describe a mixed statistical approach to assess the psychometric properties of the UCLA Loneliness Scale-16 in Portuguese old-aged individuals. The sample comprised 153 individuals (59.1% women and 40.3% men), aged 61–98 (M = 78.80, SD = 8.58). The psychometric properties of UCLA Loneliness Scale-16 were analyzed with exploratory factorial analysis, internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity and through the item response theory. The results suggested a bidimensional structure for this instrument. The scale showed satisfactory psychometric properties with a high internal consistency. In addition, a negative relationship with constructs of social support and functionality was also observed. Overall results suggest that the UCLA Loneliness Scale-16 is a psychometric reliable measure to evaluate social loneliness in the Portuguese elderly population.
