As implicações do estudo serão discutidas para
a prática e treino dos terapeutas.
In recent years, the impact of a profession has been a topic of interest for research, given the fact that professional experiences assume a central dimension in the lives of therapists as people. Several studies suggest both positive (e.g., increased self-awareness) and negative (e.g., emotional distress) impacts of doing psychotherapy for therapists themselves. Thus, this qualitative exploratory study aims to understand the therapists' own experiences of self-care and personal development, as well as to describe the main strategies they use and how they perceive their contribution to their general well-being. To this end, we developed a semi-structured interview with 15 therapists, currently working in individual clinical settings with adults. For the thematic analysis of the data, the NVivo 10 software was used. The results suggest that therapists tend to adopt both self-care strategies (e.g., exercising, maintaining good eating and sleeping habits, correctly defining the time to work versus time to rest/do other things) as well as personal development (e.g., meditate, do attention practices, have personal psychotherapy), thus trying to promote their well-being from both a behavioral and cognitive point of view. However, some of the therapists recognize difficulties in doing this and the need to invest in such strategies. The implications of the study will be discussed for the practice and training of therapists.
