Projeto da Central do Ouro no Porto: reflexão acerca do uso do aço na reabilitação

Resumo
Até ao surgimento da Revolução Industrial alguns dos métodos construtivos existentes, como era o caso da alvenaria em pedra, manifestavam diversas limitações estruturais, impossibilitando a construção em altura e de grandes vãos. Neste contexto, ocorrem diversos progressos científicos, entre os quais, a descoberta de novos materiais como o ferro, elemento que através de processos de fundição faz com que este adquira novas propriedades e dê origem ao aço, permitindo projetar construções de grande escala.
Dentro deste panorama, propomos refletir acerca da evolução do material e algumas das suas características inerentes ao ramo da arquitetura, numa compreensão alusiva à reabilitação de edifícios industriais e aos benefícios que o seu uso dispõe.
Selecionam-se algumas influências projetuais para analisar e compreender, os seus aspetos funcionais e construtivos, canalizando este conhecimento para o desenvolvimento de uma proposta projetual. Durante a evolução desse projeto é realizada uma reabilitação dos edifícios situados na área de intervenção, estabelecendo uma conexão entre os sistemas estruturais presentes nessas pré-existências.

Until the emergence of the Industrial Revolution, some of the existing construction methods, such as stone masonry, had several structural limitations, making it impossible to build in height and with large spans. In this context, several scientific advances have taken place, including the discovery of new materials such as iron, an element that through casting processes causes it to acquire new properties and give rise to steel, allowing the design of large-scale constructions. Within this panorama, we propose to reflect on the evolution of the material and some of its characteristics inherent to the field of architecture, in an understanding alluding to the rehabilitation of industrial buildings and the benefits that its use has. Some design influences are selected to analyze and understand their functional and constructive aspects, channeling this knowledge to the development of a design proposal. During the evolution of this project, a rehabilitation of the buildings located in the intervention area is carried out, establishing a connection between the structural systems present in these pre-existences.
