Resumo
Esta investigação pretende, através da análise de obras da arquitetura contemporânea,
entender as transformações que as tecnologias eletrónicas e digitais vieram trazer à
arquitetura, e questionar o que foi realmente transformado após o que podemos
identificar hoje como tendo sido a primeira revolução digital na disciplina1.
Não parece haver dúvidas que o desenvolvimento tecnológico eletrónico e informático
que despoletou nas últimas duas décadas do passado século veio alterar de forma
significativa a disciplina da arquitetura. Por um lado, alterando os processos conceptuais
e metodológicos, por outro ao transformar os processos construtivos e abrir novos
limites às possibilidades de construção e materialidade na arquitetura, incluindo novas
possibilidades morfológicas dos objetos construídos.
Paralelamente as transformações tecnológicas e eletrónicas parecem agora dominar
toda a sociedade, fenómeno que veio alterar a forma como percecionamos a arquitetura
num contexto cada vez mais simulado e virtualizado.
No entanto a arquitetura, como disciplina da construção de espaços físicos, parece
resistir em parte a esta mediatização social. O que foi então transformado na obra da
arquitetura?
Como questão central queremos questionar a utilização das tecnologias eletrónicas e
digitais em processos que muitas vezes não apresentam a obra construída como
objetivo, afastando-se de referências e precedentes da própria disciplina, mas também
inquirir a possibilidade de a arquitetura ganhar sentido numa era em que muito da
realidade se transforma em simulacro, em pequenas idiossincrasias virtuais.
Como pode a arquitetura representar uma época que parece desvalorizar a presença
física, que constrói «lugares sem espaço»2, que substitui a experiência física pela
virtual? Que critérios a definem, que objetivos se apresentam?
O que se argumenta é que a obra construída, com todas as suas idiossincrasias e
condicionantes, representa hoje, mais do que nunca, um olhar singular sobre o sentido
do uso da tecnologia eletrónica e digital na construção da arquitetura por ser exemplo
da possibilidade da construção física.
This investigation wants to understand, through the analysis of works of contemporary architecture, the transformations that took hold of the discipline of architecture after the emergent use of digital technologies and question what seems to have been transformed in architecture after what we can describe today as the First Digital Revolution3 There seems to be no doubt that the technological and electronic development of the last decades of the century has transformed significantly the discipline of architecture. On one hand by altering its conceptual and methodological processes, on the other by transforming its construction and materiality, including new morphological possibilities for the built artefacts. In parallel, these technological and electronic transformations seem to have conquered a large portion of society itself, a phenomenon that is also transforming the way we perceive architecture, at a moment where so much of our contexts are simulated and virtualized. Nevertheless, architecture as a discipline of construction physical spaces, appears to resist to this social medialization. What has changed in the work of architecture? As a central question we want to critically assess the utilization of electronic and digital technologies in processes that seem to orient themselves away from the construction aspects of the final work, away from the references and precedents of the discipline itself, as we want to inquire into the possibility of architecture gaining meaning in an era where most of reality is transformed into simulacra, into virtual idiosyncrasies. How can architecture represent an era that seems to undermine physical presence, an era that builds “places with no spaces”4, that substitutes the physical experience with a virtual counterpart? What criteria can define this architecture, what objectives seem to be present? We will argue that the finished work, with all its idiosyncrasies and limitations, represents today, more than ever before, a unique statement about the meaning of the use of electronic and digital technology in the construction of architecture.
