Today, in a digital age, the perpetration of cyberbullying and victimization in adolescents is a growing phenomenon that worries researchers and clinicians in the health area, and represents a challenge in parenting. The present study aimed to examine sociodemographic, cognitive and behavioral determinants associated with active and restrictive parental mediation in the use of digital technologies by adolescents. Participated in this study 194 fathers and mothers with adolescent children between 12 and 18 years old, residing in Portugal. The sample consisted of 72.3% of female participants (n = 142) with a mean age of 46.72 years (SD = 4.13, range from 35-61 years). The results showed that in the restrictive mediation, the significant determinants were the gender and education of the parents, the age of the children, the attitudes towards cyberbullying of the parents and the self-efficacy in the parental influence in the use from Internet. The determinants that predicted the active techniques of parental mediation were the gender and education of the parents, the age of the children, parental digital skills, parental self-efficacy in influencing the use of the internet and the request of information by fathers/mothers in the parental monitoring dimension. Therefore, the present study can contribute to the advancement of previous scientific studies, as well as to a greater knowledge and understanding of parental mediation practices in the use of the internet, paving the way for greater investment in the prevention and promotion of the mental health of Portuguese adolescents.
